Required Reading Assignment: Choose and read an autobiography or biography of a President of the United States. As you make your selection, avoid choices that are meant for audiences younger than college age.

As you read the book, make note of the following by typing onto a Microsoft Word Document direct quotes from the book and keeping page number citations for the following:

  1. at least 5 pieces of evidence of different successes in this President’s term(s) in office.

    (b) at least five pieces of evidence of different admitted or perceived failures during this President’s terms in office.

This minimum 15 direct quote assignment is to be typed and printed. Students will use these quotes as direct textual support in the defense of theses that will be constructed based on an in-class prompt to which students will  be responding during the first week of the new school year.

The categorized 15 quotes and bibliographic information page will be used by the student during his or her composing of a response to a prompt, in-class, during the first week of school. The quotes and MLA bibliographic citation of the student’s chosen book will be submitted together with the essay response. No essay is assigned at this time. 2016-2017 Summer Reading Assignment

Advanced Placement English Language and Composition

    Miami Beach Senior High

STUDENTS: Your Summer Reading for this course consists of Part one and Part two. Completion of both parts is required and will represent a significant portion of the students’ first semester grades.

    PART TWO (REQUIRED):

Overview and Rationale: As a class, we will be following the 2016 Presidential campaign from June to November, starting with independent research reading by the student over the summer. This common class conversation based on the media’s varied array of presidential campaign commentators is an indication of America's diverse peoples' beliefs, values, and personalities. One objective of the AP English Language and Composition course is that students become adept at considering multiple viewpoints about a subject, then demonstrate an ability to draw and support conclusions about that subject based on an identifiable system of belief or ethical code. An AP Chief Reader once metaphorically called this synthesizing of various source material into a cohesive,  argumentative point of view having a “conversation with scholarship.”

    Assignment Specifics:

Students will read 5 articles about the US Presidential Race from 5 different weeks between June 9-August 25. Students must use at least 3 different print or electronic media sources to access these articles. The articles read and summarized for this assignment must be based on the 2016 US Presidential election, and must be drawn from reliable, creditable  sources.

Students must create a one paragraph summary of each article, noting whether the article’s writer is objective or subjective. Students must also create an MLA bibliographic citation for each article.

These 5 articles and their citations must be drawn from at least 3 different media outlets. Articles must be drawn from 5 different summer weeks. Summary Responses must be typed and printed. This work is to be submitted upon the student’s entering AP Lang. on his or her first day of school.

    Part Three (Optional, Strongly Recommended)
