     OBJECTIVE:          

                The purpose of this course is for students to develop skills necessary to be able to communicate in the Portuguese language. This course is designed also to develop cultural awareness and knowledge of Brazilian and Portuguese culture, geography, and history.

    SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:

                A .      COMMUNICATION: To engage in conversation, express feelings and  emotions, and exchange opinion. 

    B.         WRITING: To write sentences in various tenses within the limits of vocabulary and structure presented in class.

    C.        READING: To express both orally and in writing an understanding of reading material which has been presented in class.

    D.         CULTURE AWARENESS: To  explore basic aspects of Brazilian and Portuguese culture, such as, holidays, customs, common foods, as well as common non-verbal responses.

     CONTENT: The components of the curriculum for this course are:

    A.        Language development: Students will demonstrate knowledge and application of specific vocabulary. The lessons were conceived  to engage students interest by applying  personal, social, professional and cultural topics.

    B.         Communicative Competence: Students will use Portuguese as a medium of expression in the classroom.

    C.           Literacy Skills: Students will demonstrate reading comprehension of passages containing familiar vocabulary and structure.

    D.            Composition: Students will use writing strategies in a variety of informational contexts.

    E.           Cultural Awareness: Students will demonstrate awareness of Brazilian and Portuguese cultures on topics, such as,  typical foods, major holidays, festivals, customs, and historical events

    BOOKS AND  DICTIONARY: TRAVESSIA I - textbook and workbook. Students must acquire a good bilingual dictionary to use both at home and at school.
